On their last productive day in Italy, Anne and Robert walked outside the walls of this ancient city. Halfway below lay the ruins of a necropolis, discovered in the late 19th century. The tombs dated long before the Romans conquered the city.

Music for piano solo: extract from “Nocturne (the Moon Their Mistress)” by Chris Williams, performed by Michele Chiasserini, recorded live in Cortona, 21 July 2007
