Encounter (Ontmoeting)

for violin and cello by Anne Ku

The start of a conversation is never simultaneous. Someone has to make the first move,
in this case, the cello. Action. Reaction. Momentum. Flow

In bar 14, the mood changes. The conversation shifts to a time long ago. The pace slows down.
The violin and the cello take turns having their say. One sings. The other accompanies. The violin's
tremulo from bar 20 to 25 is deliberate. This section is filled with longing and sadness until a series of
pizzicatos lift the melodious rapport into an argumentative one.

From bar 34, the two voices lose synchronization with each other, becoming increasingly dissonant
until an explosion in bar 41. The conversation ends, as it began, two voices apart.

Premiered by Miren Ceberio (violin) and Allard Hartkamp (cello) on 10 November 2004 in
Utrecht Conservatory Composers Concert, room K108.
